Celebrate Diversity with Black-Owned Franchises

What does the future look like for Black-owned franchises? And how is GIRLKIN Lashes leading the way? Find out how we’re empowering Black women to take charge of their careers and become their own bosses!

The State of the Industry for Black-Owned Franchises

According to industry research from Zippia, the average franchise owner is a 44-year-old white man. There are just under 700,000 franchise owners in the U.S., 65% of them are male. Over 70% are white. Only 6% of franchise owners are African-American.

We see this as an opportunity for change for those of us who value equality and diversity in business. The good news is the number of minority-owned franchises is rising, from 22.85% in 2010 to 26.4% in 2019 (Zippia)We see this as an opportunity for change for those of us who value equality and diversity in business.

The franchise industry is becoming more diverse each year. In addition, women and minority entrepreneurs are increasingly investing in their own businesses. At GIRLKIN Lashes, we want to help them take charge of their careers.

The Earning Potential of Black Women

On average, Black women earn just 63% of what non-Hispanic white men earn. That’s according to data from the American Association of University Women (AAUW). This is also 20% less than women in general. If the pay gap only continues to close at the current rate, Black women won’t reach equality for another 350 years.

One industry that bucks this trend is the franchise industry. While a pay gap still exists, it’s much smaller. In 2019, female franchise owners earned 96% of what their male counterparts earned (Zippia). That makes franchising an exciting opportunity for Black women to get ahead in the workplace. Franchising with a Black-owned business could dramatically increase their earning potential.

GIRLKIN Lashes Black-Owned Franchises

GIRLKIN Lashes is a Black, female-owned business  committed to helping other Black women get ahead. GIRLKIN Lashes was founded by Kim Fernandez, who started working in her living room in 2016. Kim drew on her years of experience in senior management positions to create a brand that empowers and supports others. Her reputation for providing exceptional beauty treatments is the basis of GIRLKIN Lashes’ solid brand awareness.

Our GIRLies love being pampered in our spa-like salons. And our franchisees benefit from our mission to empower other Black women to achieve financial freedom. GIRLKIN Lashes is the future of Black in business!

Creating Opportunities for Black Women at Every Level

As strong advocates of Black-owned businesses, we want to help Black women rise in the workplace. Our certification training courses give women the chance to take control of their futures. We help newcomers to the industry master the skills they need to become lashing experts. Our students can then go on to work for top lash extension salons, start their own businesses, or join our network of Black-owned franchises.

Even experienced eyelash extension stylists can benefit from our refresher training. We teach advanced techniques such as volume lashing that can help lash artists take their careers to the next level. As a result, students elevate their earning potential and open up new opportunities for their future. By working together and supporting each other, we can all rise!

An Industry Built by Female Entrepreneurs

The beauty salon industry is filled with self-starters. Over a third of cosmetologists are self-employed, compared with just 7% of the population as a whole. That means this industry is a hub of female entrepreneurship and empowerment. Almost 86% of cosmetologists in the U.S. are women, and 11% identify as Black or African-American (Zippia).

More than almost anywhere else, Black and minority women are getting ahead in the beauty salon industry. They can work independently, reduce the pay gap, and run their own businesses.  These entrepreneurial women that GIRLKIN Lashes are on a mission to support through training and business development.

Our Black-owned franchises provide an operational model for franchise owners to follow. This can reduce the stress of launching their business locations. We want to help franchisees avoid the errors common to independent start-ups and guide them so they can hit the ground running. And at every step, we’re there to support our franchisees and help them build a rewarding business.

A Women-Centered Business That Puts Black Women in the Spotlight

Kim Fernandez established the GIRLKIN Lashes franchise as a way to provide more opportunities to like-minded businesswomen. Black women run 35% of Black-owned businesses, and Black women are the demographic most likely to start their own business. Right now, 17% of Black women are starting or running their own businesses.

These are promising statistics for the future of Black in business. However, many Black women have more significant socio-economic hurdles than other demographics. That’s why at GIRLKIN Lashes, we’re committed to elevating Black women and providing them with more opportunities. At every step of their careers, from becoming a lash stylist to opening their own Black-owned franchises, GIRLKIN Lashes can help.
